Over 2000 years ago, the great philosopher Aristotle explained that different kinds of human effort require different kinds of knowledge. He identified: craft knowledge of tools and methods; scientific knowledge for the laws of nature; and ethical judgement to make decisions. His point was to send the appropriate thinker to get the job done. As a leader presiding over a multifaceted organization, it’s a big part of our job to make sure the right kinds of thinking are being marshaled to make those different kinds of decisions. Leaders must size up a situation and the types of knowledge required.
