Julia Chen is the Chief Data Scientist at P&C Global and brings a wealth of experience spanning over two decades, specializing in cognitive computing, big data analytics, data mining and warehousing, and complex platform integration. Fusing her skills in IT transformation, digital reinvention, and strategy & innovation, Julia uncovers valuable insights from data to enhance corporate performance. Her industry expertise includes retail, healthcare, transportation, and financial services.

Julia embarked on her career journey with Experian, excelling in the role of Manager of Data Modeling. Her responsibility was to weave complex customer datasets with Experian’s extensive consumer data repositories. This created unique insights and opportunities for clients, enabling them to offer improved customer service, maximize revenues, and manage intricate risk scenarios effectively.

Next, Julia took her talents to IBM, contributing to developing unique cognitive computing solutions from IBM Watson for a diverse global clientele. From there, she joined Groupe Galeries Lafayette and held pivotal roles in data management, analytics, and consumer insights at Cofinoga, one of Europe’s then-largest consumer lenders and the group’s consumer financial services subsidiary.

As an advisor at P&C Global, Julia assists clients across varied industries to leverage their data effectively. She reveals unique opportunities for businesses to improve and transform and unlock their full potential.  Recent examples of her transformative client outcomes include:

  • Julia spearheaded a digital transformation initiative for a leading North American retail chain. This entailed overhauling its IT infrastructure, introducing cutting-edge AI and machine learning capabilities, and implementing a sophisticated data analytics system. These changes led to improved operational efficiency, cost savings of $130 million annually, and a 15% increase in year-on-year sales due to the newfound data-driven decision-making process.
  • For a multinational pharmaceutical company, she orchestrated the integration of a data-driven supply chain management system. This approach optimized production, logistics, and inventory management, leading to a significant reduction in waste and a $95 million decrease in annual operational costs. Moreover, it ensured better regulatory compliance, reducing the risk and cost of potential fines and reputational damage.
  • Julia managed the implementation of a predictive analytics program for a global financial institution. By providing real-time risk assessment and financial forecasting, this initiative resulted in a 20% reduction in non-performing loans and increased the bank’s profit margins by $120 million within the first year.
  • Working with a leading logistics company, she designed and executed a data-driven route optimization system. This innovation slashed fuel costs by 18% and reduced delivery times by 22% within the first six months, enhancing customer satisfaction and contributing to an annual cost saving of $80 million.
  • Julia was also instrumental in transforming a luxury Asian fashion brand’s e-commerce strategy. She incorporated big data and AI-driven customer behaviour analysis into the company’s online platform. This resulted in a threefold increase in online sales and a 50% reduction in customer acquisition costs, leading to a revenue increase of $150 million within two years.

In terms of academic credentials, Julia holds a Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BS in Computer Science from Boston College and Executive Certificate in Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation from the MIT Sloan School of Management, Cybersecurity Graduate Certificate from the Stanford School of Engineering, and Executive Certificate in Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy – MIT Sloan School of Management.

Julia and her husband call two of the world’s most exciting cities home – Paris and Dubai. Juggling their time between these two global business hubs, they enjoy a unique fusion of cultural and professional experiences. An interesting tidbit about Julia’s personal life is that she met her husband during her tenure at P&C Global, where he was a client executive. It’s an inside joke that she was so good at her job that she even ‘analyzed’ her way into a marriage proposal!

Outside her professional pursuits, Julia is a keen art collector, an interest fueled by her time in Paris, one of the world’s art capitals. She also enjoys yoga, a habit picked up in Dubai that helps her maintain a sense of calm amidst the fast-paced world of data science. Furthermore, Julia takes pleasure in mentoring young data scientists, helping them navigate the challenges and opportunities of this exciting field. She often quips, “Data is like a box of chocolates. You never know what insights you’re going to get.”
